Wednesday is off to a wet and warm start as rain moves into North Georgia, and temperatures are 10 to 20 degrees above Tuesday’s morning lows.
Metro Atlanta is in the 60s to start the day thanks to a thick layer of clouds, and those clouds are beginning to produce rain showers. It’s been nearly a month since the last time the city got measurable rainfall, and while a rainy day could impact outdoor plans, it’s certainly needed, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said.
“We’re going to be dealing with off-and-on rain,” Deon said of Wednesday’s forecast. “It’s not a complete washout, but it definitely will be an inconvenience. Just be prepared for that.”
Showers falling Wednesday morning are mainly spotty and light, with some more moderate rain moving across the eastern Atlanta suburbs before sunrise. Deon said roads will be wet in spots, but she does not expect any widespread issues for the morning drive.
Rain chances will increase to about 60% later Wednesday as a cold front approaches, she said. Just after the lunch hour, Deon expects to see heavy rainfall in the western counties out ahead of the front, which will move to the south by the evening hours.
There is a chance rain could cause delays at Truist Park when the Braves take on the Philadelphia Phillies for Game 2 of the National League Division Series. Baseball fans planning to watch from the ballpark or The Battery should “pack your patience,” Deon said.
Temperatures should be in the 70s by the time the first pitch is thrown at 4:35 p.m., and Deon said those numbers will fall throughout the game with the showers and clouds around. Atlanta’s projected high Wednesday is 76 degrees.
It won’t be until late Wednesday the front arrives in North Georgia, and with it the chance of strong or even severe storms, Deon said.
“The good news is as it makes its way a little bit closer into our area, it sort of falls apart,” she said. “We’re not expecting to see that line holding together, but there is again still that possibility of strong to severe storms.”
The Storm Prediction Center of the National Weather Service considers parts of northwest Georgia to be at a Level 1 risk of severe weather. Deon said there is a possibility strong storms will reach down into the western suburbs.
Damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall will be possible, according to Deon. Rain could stick around through the evening hours and into early Thursday morning, but by the afternoon North Georgia should be drying out.
For Friday and this weekend, Deon is calling for the return of sunshine and some cooler weather, with morning lows in the 40s and 50s through Sunday.
