A heat advisory is in effect as temperatures rise all across North Georgia on Tuesday afternoon and heat index values top 100 degrees.
The advisory extends until 8 p.m., when Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said the region could start to see some relief from the heat. Until then, Deon suggests taking it easy, staying hydrated and limiting time outdoors if possible.
“We’re talking about dangerously hot conditions as the heat index will be climbing well above 100, and we’re talking 105 to 110,” she said. “This is going to be right around 3 p.m. in the afternoon.”
The heat index is a measure of how it feels outside and is exacerbated by high temperatures and high humidity. Actual temperatures will be closer to the mid-90s, with a projected high of 95 degrees in Atlanta.
After a start in the mid-70s, Deon said Atlanta was warming into the lower 90s at lunchtime, but it feels more like 101 outside. The heat advisory went into effect at noon and includes all of North Georgia, except the northernmost mountain counties.

“Not expecting to see a lot in the way of rain early on,” she said. “Later into the afternoon and evening, though, a few showers and storms could get going. Where we get those storms to develop, some could become strong, maybe reaching severe limits.”
With a 40% chance of development, not everyone will see rain, she said. But anywhere showers or storms develop, there is a low-end threat of severe weather. Damaging wind gusts and hail will be the primary concerns, according to Deon.

“We’re not going to see a lot of rain, but where we see some showers and storms fire up this afternoon, that could provide some brief relief from the heat,” she said.
Wednesday will be another hot one. After a sunny start, Deon expects temperatures to again climb into the mid-90s, and a 40% chance of scattered showers and storms is in store for the afternoon.
Deon said high heat and humidity will make it feel hotter than it is outside all week. There are more comfortable days ahead, however.
“Humidity levels are dropping way down by the weekend,” she said. “It’s going to feel a lot better as we start to dry things out.”
