MONDAY’S WEATHER | Advisory issued for metro Atlanta as extreme heat returns

‘Hottest stretch of weather’ this summer is just ahead, experts say

Some serious heat is in store Monday for metro Atlanta, with record high temperatures in the forecast later this week.

After a warm start with temperatures in the 70s, the city is heating up fast Monday. Temperatures were rising through the 80s at midmorning, and the high this afternoon is a projected 95 degrees.

High humidity is going to make it feel more like triple digits outside. Especially on the Southside, where a heat advisory is in place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., because feels-like temperatures could reach up to 106 degrees.

Henry, Clayton, Fayette, Newton and Rockdale counties are included in Monday’s advisory, along with several counties in Middle Georgia.

“Prepare your mind, prepare your body. Make sure you’re staying hydrated,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said. All across North Georgia, there’s going to be “lots of sunshine, no rain, and we’ll see just a few clouds kind of mixing in, so nothing to really help bring us any relief from the heat.”

Tuesday will essentially be a carbon copy of Monday, Deon said. “Just a touch hotter.”

Through Saturday, the city of Atlanta is providing a temporary cooling center from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Water will be provided at the center, which is located at the Selena Butler Facility, 98 William Holmes Borders Senior Drive SE, Atlanta.

The heat is being pushed in by an area of high pressure that has been hovering over the central United States and has expanded to cover Georgia. It’s keeping conditions clear and sunny, but it’s also keeping the rain away, Deon said. The next significant chance for rain will come over the weekend.

“As (the high pressure) moves into our area, we’re going to see the hottest stretch of weather we’ve seen so far this season,” she said.

It will be so hot, in fact, that daily record highs could be set later this week, Deon said.

That being said, remember not to leave your pets or children in the car, as temperatures inside can quickly reach deadly levels.
