FRIDAY’S WEATHER: Chance of rain could provide relief from the heat

Metro Atlanta has been sweltering under 90-degree temperatures and poor air quality all week, but a chance of rain in the forecast Friday could spell relief.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan is calling for a 40% chance of a shower or thunderstorm this afternoon as temperatures return to the mid-90s. Not all neighborhoods will get wet, but those that do could be in for a little cooldown, he said.

The rest of the region is in for another hot and humid afternoon. Atlanta’s projected high is 94 degrees, which is four degrees above average for late July. There are no air quality alerts in place Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

“A lot of heat, we are used to that this week, but there will be some thunder, some lightning and some rain,” Monahan said.

Monahan expects rain activity to ramp up ahead of the evening commute but fade away pretty quickly after sunset. Saturday should start dry before a 30% chance of showers and storms for the afternoon, according to the latest forecast.

A high of 97 on Thursday made it the hottest day so far this year in Atlanta. Monahan expects “more or less the same kind of weather” through the start of August as the region rides out the hottest stretch of the summer.

According to Monahan, highs in the mid-90s will stick around through the weekend, and the shower chances will, too. Dry weather returns next week.

Atlanta's projected high is 94 degrees Friday, and there is a 40% chance of a shower or storm.
