Photos: Remembering Michael Jackson’s death 10 years later

As we remember Michael Jackson on the anniversary of his birthday, take a look back through the years.

The five Jackson brothers who sing as the Jackson 5, above, are about ready to resume school after a summer vacation on August 31, 1971, that took them to 40 cities in 60 days, playing concerts that attracted as many as 160,000. Entertainer Michael Jackson poses with his pet boa constrictor September 15, 1987 in the USA. Jackson, who was the lead singer for the Jackson Five by age eight, reached the peak of his solo career with 1982's "Thriller," the best-selling album of all time and recipient of eight Grammy awards.

In August 1987, Jackson released "Bad." Nine of the 11 tracks were written by the singer, and five hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Another 80s pop icon with two almost-weren't hits: Producer Quincy Jones didn't think "Billie Jean" was strong enough to include on "Thriller" or that "Smooth Criminal" was strong enough to include on "Bad," but eventually relented when Jackson insisted the songs would do well. Which they did.

Jackson was accused of child sexual abuse in 1993, but the criminal charges were dropped because of a lack of evidence. Jackson settled the civil case out of court with an estimated $20 million payment to Jordy Chandler's family. The ordeal took a toll on the performer's image, and he became a curiousity as much as a legendary entertainer. In this 1996 photo, he is seen wearing an anti-pollution mask and shielding his head.

Jackson's legacy might have shifted for good when the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department arrested him in 2003 on more sexual abuse charges. His trial began two years later. During that time, he suffered from stress-related illnesses that caused severe weight loss. The trial lasted five months and ended in May 2005, when he was acquitted on all counts.

JACKSON FAMILY DRAMA: A judge on Wednesday intervened in the turmoil roiling the Jackson family, appointing the son of Tito Jackson to serve as temporary guardian of Michael Jackson's children in the absence of the family matriarch and amid a feud over the pop superstar's estate.

Michael Jackson's family, friends and music-industry colleagues joined with thousands of fans Tuesday to bid farewell to the pop singer at the site where he rehearsed for a series of comeback concerts. The Jackson brothers accompany the casket into the memorial service.

The 2009 American Music Award nominees were announced on Tuesday and the late Michael Jackson is up for no fewer than five, including Artist of the Year. The awards will be televised live Nov. 22 on ABC.
