Investigators believe speed may have been a factor in a crash that killed three teenagers and injured two others, Alpharetta police said late Wednesday.
Shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday, officers were called to a wreck on Westside Parkway just north of Maxwell Road, police said. There were five people — all 18-year-olds — inside a vehicle when it crashed, and two were killed at the scene.
Aryan Joshi and Sriya Avasarala died from their injures, officials confirmed.
A third person, Anvi Sharma, died at Wellstar North Fulton Medical Center, where two others were also being treated, according to police.
“Based on evidence at the scene, it is believed that the driver lost control of the vehicle which then came to rest upside down in the tree line,” police said in a media release. “The investigation remains ongoing; however, from the initial data gathered it is believed that speed may have been a factor in the crash.”
The driver survived the crash, according to police.
Joshi and another student injured in the crash were seniors at Alpharetta High School, where additional counselors were available to help those dealing with grief. Principal Mike Scheifflee informed teachers and staff at the school in an email.
“It greatly saddens me to inform you of the death of senior Aryan Joshi,” Scheifflee said. “Aryan will be deeply missed.”
Graduation for Alpharetta High will be held May 23, according to the Fulton County schools website.
Avasarala and Sharma both completed their freshmen year at the University of Georgia, according to police. The other teen injured is a Georgia State University student.
On Wednesday afternoon, officers temporarily closed Westside Parkway from Maxwell Road to Hembree Road to continue the investigation.
