A day after severe storms pounded the area, metro Atlanta is experiencing an unusually cool Friday.
In fact, it set a record for May 5, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said.
“We’re not even going to make it out of the 50s this afternoon,” Nitz said.
The previous lowest high recorded on May 5 was 58 degrees in 1931.
Currently, the temperature is 51 degrees.
The cool down follows Thursday’s severe weather, which included a confirmed EF-0 tornado at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
Only light showers were falling in parts of metro Atlanta Friday afternoon.
That was not the case Thursday, when severe storms toppled trees, closed roads and left thousands without power across parts of metro Atlanta and North Georgia.
The National Weather Service reported only minor damage at the airport after the tornado.
In DeKalb County, officials rescued a man trapped in his car on LaVista Road after a tree fell on it, fire spokesman Capt. Eric Jackson said. The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to Channel 2.
Trees also landed on a home in the 3600 block of Fortingale Road in Chamblee and crashed into an SUV along John Calvin Avenue in south Fulton County.
No injuries were reported in either incident, Channel 2 reported.
Dozens of trees fell in Floyd County, including one that went through a home as a girl watched television, Channel 2 reported. The mom, who was also home at the time, said she purchased the home six months ago. The mother and daughter are OK, according to Channel 2.
Downed trees in Fannin County blocked Ga. 5 between Blue Ridge and McCaysville, Sheriff Dane Kirby told Channel 2.
And property damage was reported in and around Blue Ridge and near a Chevrolet dealership on the south side of town, Kirby said. The county reported schools would be closed on Friday because many people were still without power late Thursday.
Crews were making progress early Friday in restoring power to those left in the dark during Thursday’s storms.
Outages that affected tens of thousands of Georgia Power customers Thursday were down to 43 just before 2 p.m. Friday. The outages affected less than 400 customers.
