Former Braves pitcher John Smoltz received the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award at the 11th annual Atlanta Sports Awards Thursday night.
Smoltz, a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, was recognized for his contributions to the Braves organization and the community during his career.
The Hawks received three awards at the Atlanta Sports Council event, including Team of the Year. The Hawks' Mike Budenholzer was named Coach of the Year and forward Paul Millsap was selected as Professional Athlete of the Year.
Lee McCoy, a standout men’s golfer at the University of Georgia, was recognized as Collegiate Athlete of the Year. Former UGA wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell was awarded the Community Spirit Award. Mitchell, who is third all-time in career receptions at Georgia, was honored for his off-the-field initiatives to promote education and literacy skills in local schools.
Former Wheeler High School boys basketball star Jaylen Brown, now at the University of California, received the High School Player of the Year honor. Brown helped lead the Wildcats to a state title as a senior in 2015.
