Former Georgia Tech wide receiver Micheal Summers, who started 26 games for the Yellow Jackets in three seasons and left the team late last season, will play his final season for Georgia Southern.

Summers, who grew up in Statesboro and played for Statesboro High, made the announcement on his Twitter account Wednesday with a message that began, "Statesboro, I'm coming home."

Summers will graduate Saturday from Tech with a degree in business management and have one year of eligibility with the Eagles.

Summers said his decision was motivated by a desire to return home and provide an example to the youth of his hometown.

In him, “they can see a product of their hometown, a person who in a sense kind of beat the odds and got out and was able to come to Atlanta, come to Georgia Tech and be a student-athlete and get a degree and come back and give back to his community,” he said.

Summers said he considered a few other options, but “I definitely knew deep down that I was going home”

In his career, Summers caught 29 passes in 34 games, including 12 in seven games last season. He left the team with three games remaining in the season, a topic he declined to address Wednesday.

By coincidence, Tech will play Georgia Southern Oct. 15 at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Summers called it “exciting” but not the reason he chose to transfer to Georgia Southern.

“That’s just one game out of 12,” he said.

Summers said he will pursue a master’s in higher education. He is interested in possibly coaching high-school or college football and has a dream to one day be the coach at Statesboro High.
