The Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board will take up a proposal on Jan. 17, 2017, to rename a street leading into Gainesville High School after one of its most famous alumni.

Touchdown Drive, within view of the Hall County school’s football field, will bear the name DeShaun Watson Drive if it meets the board’s approval.

Watson was an AJC Super 11 selection in 2013 and left the Red Elephants as the Georgia record-holder for career passing yards in high school. In three seasons at Clemson, Watson has led the Tigers to two College Football Playoff appearances and has twice been named a Heisman Trophy finalist.

Clemson faces Ohio State Dec. 31 in the Fiesta Bowl for a shot at the National Championship.

On Tuesday, Watson made waves with his claim that, “I'm the best player in the country. That's how I think.”

Watson won a state Class AAAAAA title with the Red Elephants in 2012.

Watson would be the second Gainesville football player to have a road near the school named after him. Billy Lothridge Boulevard was named after the 1963 Heisman Trophy runner up in 2005.
