Dwight Howard will miss a third straight game due to his back as the Hawks starting center did not travel with the team to Denver for Friday’s game against the Nuggets.

Howard did not play against the Thunder on Monday and the Timberwolves on Wednesday due to back tightness. He was listed as questionable on the team’s injury report before each game.

The Hawks flew to Denver Thursday before a practice in the city.

Both Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer and Howard said Wednesday that the back issue was improving. Budenholzer said the team was being cautious with the injury as a preventive measure.

“It’s a lot better than it was a couple days ago,” Howard said Wednesday morning. “It continues to get better. We’ll see how it feels tonight and go from there.”

Howard was later ruled inactive for the game.

Howard leads the Hawks in rebounding at 13.0 per game and his third on the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game. He also missed a game earlier this season with a left quad contusion.
