Hawks select Oregon’s Dorsey in second round (updated)

The Hawks selected Oregon shooting guard Tyler Dorsey with their first second-round pick, No. 41 overall, in the NBA Draft on Thursday.

Dorsey, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound sophomore, averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists last season. He shot .423 (88 of 208) from 3-point range, a strength.

Dorsey raised his draft profile with an impressive run in the NCAA Tournament. He averaged 23.8 points, a tournament best, in five games. He scored at least 20 points in each game, including 21 in a loss to North Carolina.

“The other thing we like about him is that you might not be aware of is that he is a very good secondary ball handler,” Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk said. “He can put the ball on the floor, run the pick-and-roll, create plays for others.”

The Hawks ended the draft by selecting Alpha Kaba, a power forward/center from France. The 6-10, 226 pound Kaba has a 7-5 wingspan. He averaged 9.0 points and 8.2 rebounds while playing for Mega Bemax in Serbia.

Schlenk immediately noted Kaba’s wingspan and said “If nothing else, I’m consistent.”

It is unclear whether Kaba will participate in the Las Vegas Summer League for the Hawks. Schlenk said he expects Kaba to remain overseas next season, an expected draft-and-stash.
