The condition of the son of former Atlanta Braves second baseman Keith Lockhart appears to be improving.
Jason Lockhart, 15, suffered fractures to his nose after he was hit in the face June 17 during a baseball tournament in South Carolina.
On Thursday afternoon, an upbeat Sydney Lockhart said on Facebook that her brother was now awake at Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta.
"We have seen his personality pop up a few times today and it has been so wonderful."
She cautioned, however, that Jason remained “uncomfortable” and “anxious” following the latest procedure.
A tear from the fracture in Jason’s nose caused uncontrollably bleeding a few days after he suffered the injury. He had been on life support since Friday, following numerous complications.
On Wednesday night, Jason’s sister wrote that doctors were encouraged by the latest procedure to stem the bleeding:
"Jason came back from surgery with a great report from the doctor!!!! They are confident that this resolved the bleeding problem. He is awake and still in recovery. We are bedside and helping keep him comfortable during the transition without his breathing tube. Thank you so much for all your prayers!!!!! Keep them coming as he begins his recovery."
Wednesday’s procedure was the latest of about a half dozen attempts to alleviate the problem in the 11 days since the incident.
Keith Lockhart, who played with the Braves from 1997 to 2002 and is now a scout with the Chicago Cubs, has provided updates on social media and asked for prayers for his son.
