Former Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez is reportedly among the leading candidates to replace Brad Ausmus as the Detroit Tigers manager.

MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports the Tigers have asked to speak to the Marlins' third base coach about their managerial opening. Ausmus' stint with the Tigers (64-98) after his contract was not extended.

The Braves fired Gonzalez in May 2016 after a 9-28 start.

Gonzalez, served as Atlanta’s manager for six seasons after replacing his mentor, Bobby Cox, when the legendary Braves manager retired after the 2010 season. He was the first Braves manager fired since Russ Nixon was dumped in June 1990 and replaced by Cox.
