The Braves’ game against the Mets on Thursday night at SunTrust Park was postponed by rain in the fourth inning and will be made up at a later date, most likely in June.

Jay Bruce’s two-run homer in the fourth gave the Mets a 3-1 lead. But because fewer than five innings were played it was not an official game — the statistics were wiped away and game will be played again in its entirety rather than resume from the point it was halted.

The Mets return to Atlanta for two more series June 9-11 and Sept. 15-17 and the game will likely be made up as a doubleheader during the first of those series, though nothing was announced Thursday.

Braves manager Brian Snitker looked at the positive aspect of the rainout: He didn’t have to use any relief pitchers and the Braves didn’t lose a game like they would’ve if five innings had been completed and they trailed.

“It kind of gives the bullpen a day to breathe, which we’ve got three more days before the next off day,” Snitker said. “Obviously you want to play them and you want to win them, but we wouldn’t even have gotten four innings out of the starter (Jaime Garcia) today, because we would’ve had to go to the bullpen when we came back from the rain delay. And all those (relievers) that pitched last night were going to have to go again.”

The Mets won two of three games in the rain-shortened series. It was the 11th game at SunTrust Park and none of the previous 10 had been delayed by rain.

The Braves and Mets were already scheduled to play a Sept. 25 doubleheader in New York to make up a game rained out last week at Citi Field.

The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Wilmer Flores hit a leadoff double. T.J. Rivera followed with a single and Jose Reyes grounded into a double play with Flores scoring. Garcia struck out Rene Rivera to end the inning.

Consecutive one-out doubles from Brandon Phillips and Freddie Freeman in the third inning tied the score, 1-1. But after Garcia walked Asdrubal Cabrera to start the fourth inning, Bruce hit a long home run off Garcia that landed just in front of the second level of the Chop House beyond right field.

Bruce’s homer and everything else that happened in the game was erased when it got rained out.

The game was halted two ground-outs later and delayed for two hours before it was officially called.
