Two people in a car miraculously escaped injury Friday when a tractor-trailer carrying a load of potatoes overturned on top of their car near I-85 in Gwinnett County, authorities said.

The driver of the car suffered only a minor injury and was treated at a hospital despite the car being nearly crushed, fire spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said. The passenger in the car was taken to a hospital with only a moderate injury.

“There were angels that were with those people,” a witness to the crash told Channel 2 Action News. “Both of them could’ve been killed.”

Crews cleared the three-vehicle scene on Boggs Road and Satellite Boulevard just before 4 p.m., Channel 2 reported. A Gwinnett fire hazmat unit also responded and was able to contain fuel runoff from the accident, Rutledge said.

The tractor-trailer driver, Gulab Singh, has been charged with reckless driving, Channel 2 reported. He told the station that his vehicle’s brakes failed after he exited I-85 southbound. He was not injured.

The driver of a pickup truck that was sideswiped by the tractor-trailer was treated at the scene.
