UPDATE [Saturday, 5:46 p.m.]: U.S. 278 at Metromont Road has been repaired and is back open, Hiram police said in a statement. The water main has been repaired and water has been restored to surrounding businesses.

ORIGINAL STORY: Water is flowing again along U.S. 278 in Paulding County, but it could be midday Saturday or later before all traffic lanes reopen.

Flooding from a water main break Friday reduced eastbound traffic to one lane on a stretch of the highway in Hiram, officials said. Also, water service was off for awhile to businesses in the area.

Crews worked overnight to repair the broken pipe that caused the flooding, but road repairs are a long way from complete, Channel 2 Action News reported. There’s no exact estimate of when the work will be finished.

“Paulding County Water System (PCWS) and it’s contractor is continuing to work on installing the isolation valves. As soon as that work is completed, Department of Transportation crews are in place to begin repair of the roadway,” Paulding County Emergency Management officials said Friday in a Facebook post.

Drivers are advised to use alternate routes such as Bill Carruth Parkway or avoid the area.

Hiram police said Friday in a Twitter post that "multiple accidents" were reported on U.S. 278 in the area of the break.

Rocks in a pipe caused the break, water system Director Laurie Ashmore told Channel 2.
