A 21-year-old driver was arrested for allegedly going 85 mph and causing a wreck that killed a U.S. Army veteran from Marietta, police said.

Investigators determined Jabriel Wooden, also of Marietta, was traveling 40 mph over the speed limit when he allegedly caused the crash that killed 66-year-old Bruce Barker on June 25.

Wooden faces first-degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving charges.

The crash happened on South Cobb Drive at Appleton Road, Cobb County police spokeswoman Officer Alicia Chilton said.

Baker, who was driving a 1996 Ford Ranger, was traveling southbound when he made a left turn into a private drive, Chilton said.

At that point, Wooden’s 2012 Ford Mustang collided with the Ranger, Chilton said. Witnesses reported he was weaving in and out of traffic, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Barker was a retired carpenter, Channel 2 reported. His sister told the news station that he seldom drove his pickup truck for personal reasons, usually using it to take others to appointments, grocery shopping or to work.

“They tell me how kind he was, how much he used to do for them and how they will miss him,” Gail Fowler said.

Wooden is being held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center, Chilton said.
