A driver was taken to a local hospital after a car left the road, hit a guardrail, flipped over and caught fire on I-285 West in Dunwoody.

Two police officers called to the scene arrived to find the car overturned and on fire about 5 a.m. Thursday at Ashford Dunwoody Road, police said.

“Our officers utilized their fire extinguishers to keep the fire from spreading while they removed the driver from the vehicle through the passenger side door,” Dunwoody police Sgt. Robert Parsons said.

The driver does not appear to have life-threatening injuries, Parsons said.

The incident prompted officials to shut down westbound lanes on I-285 for about one hour, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Even after all lanes opened about 6 a.m., delays temporarily stretched back to Doraville.

It’s unclear what caused the crash.
