1897: Inspired by the inaugural Olympic marathon, the Boston Athletic Association launches what would become the oldest annually conducted race of its kind in the world.

1966: Bobbi Gibb makes history as the first woman to complete the race, though women weren't officially allowed to compete until 1972.

1980: Rosie Ruiz is stripped of her title after officials find she didn't complete the whole course.

1986: The first cash prizes are awarded.
