The company told WFXT that employees of TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods need the help after the island they call home was devastated by Hurricane Maria in September.

"We believe it is the right thing for us to do under these circumstances," a spokesperson for the company told WFXT.

More than 60 percent of the island remains without power six weeks after the Category 4 storm made landfall and knocked out power.

It’s unclear how many of the roughly 29 TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods stores in Puerto Rico remain closed or how many workers TJX employs on the island.

Some have praised the company’s move, saying TJX could have saved money by not paying the employees while they can’t work.

Facebook user Iván Meléndez wrote in a post that his son, who works at a Marshall's store in Puerto Rico, assured him that the company has been helping its workers.
"I'm worried about my son, and he told me, 'Quiet, Daddy, Marshall's has been paying us," Meléndez wrote in Spanish. "Thanks to (TJX) for such an honorable gesture. From now on, I'm going to support this chain even more."
