No verdict yet in Vernon Forrest murder trial

A Fulton County jury was dismissed and court adjourned for the day Tuesday without a verdict in the death of former boxing champion Vernon Forrest.

Deliberations began Tuesday morning in the trial of Demario Ware, one of the suspects accused in Forrest's fatal shooting. The jury asked the court three questions on the first day. Court resumes at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The jurors received instructions from the judge Monday afternoon and went home after a day of closing arguments. Ware is facing a number of charges, including felony murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

In court Tuesday, Ware's defense attorney, Michael Mann, revealed that Ware was slightly injured Monday in an auto accident as he was being returned to jail by a Fulton County sheriff's deputy.

Ware bumped his head in the accident and spent several hours at the hospital before being released around 3 a.m., Mann said.

Ware, 22, faces life in prison if convicted of murder in the death of the former boxing champion, gunned down near a southwest Atlanta gas station after he stopped to put air in his tires on July 25, 2009.

Ware has confessed to pointing a gun at Forrest and demanding his gold, championship ring and diamond Rolex watch, but he did not fire the series of shots that killed the boxer. After being robbed, Forrest chased Ware, who was able to run away and hide, according to testimony during the trial, which began last week in Fulton County Superior Court.

As Forrest walked back to the gas station, he was confronted by another man, alleged to be Charman Sinkfield. As Forrest walked away from Sinkfield, Sinkfield allegedly fired several shots, hitting Forrest seven times.

A third suspect, Jquante Crews, is accused of being the getaway driver, picking up both Ware and Sinkfield and leaving the scene.
