A Woodstock High School cheerleader died Friday morning in a two-vehicle crash, a Cherokee County sheriff’s office spokeswoman said.
Madilyn Phillips, 16, was driving a Buick LaCrosse that was hit by a Kenworth flatbed truck, Sgt. Marianne Kelley said in a news release.
Shortly before 7:30 a.m., deputies responded to Ball Ground Highway at East Cherokee Drive, which is south of the city of Ball Ground, Kelley said. They learned Phillips was making a left turn when the truck hit her.
The truck, driven by Jerymie Thurman, 37, of Cartersville, was northbound on Ball Ground Highway at the time, Kelley said.
Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Cherokee County School District released a statement about the incident.
“We join the Woodstock High School community in mourning the tragic loss of one of its Wolverines,” the statement read. “We have sent our crisis response team to the school to provide additional counseling and support for students and staff. Please keep the student’s family and the entire Woodstock High School community in your hearts.”
Thurman was taken to a hospital. His condition was not available.
The investigation is ongoing.
