Maryline Blackburn, a recording artist from Smyrna, beat GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin in the 1984 Miss Alaska contest. Blackburn grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska, and became Alaska's first African American representative to the Miss America pageant.
