The Smyrna City Council voted recently to establish rules for a no parking zone. Any Smyrna resident requesting a no parking zone must submit a written petition to the city engineer, containing signatures of at least 70 percent of the owners of property next to the street for which the no parking zone is requested.
All of the adjacent property owners should be contacted and given the opportunity to sign the petition.
Once the petition has been submitted and validated by the city engineer, the street will be reviewed to determine whether such parking is dangerous to those using the roadway or whether the parking would interfere with the free movement of traffic.
If the city engineer decides the street meets those criteria and if all other laws and regulations have been met, the petition will be presented to the Mayor and Council at their regularly scheduled City Council meeting for their final decision.
However, these no parking zones and signs may be removed if city staff determine that such parking is no longer dangerous to those using the roadway or no longer would interfere with the free movement of traffic.
Also, temporary exceptions may be made by city staff for no more than 30 consecutive days, without City Council approval, to allow no parking zones for public safety, construction or engineer projects or city-sponsored functions.
If the temporary signs are needed for longer than 30 days, city staff will be required to submit a written request to the mayor and Council for their decision.
