Police in Sandy Springs will soon have something else besides their badge and gun to put on before their shift.

At its March 21 meeting, the Sandy Springs City Council awarded a contract to TASER International to equip Sandy Springs police with body cameras. TASER — a developer, manufacturer and distributor of electrical weapons and accessories based in Scottsdale, Arizona — was one of five companies to respond to the city’s request for cameras in September 2016.

Sandy Springs will purchase 70 body cameras for its officers. The total pricetag for the cameras, initial cost and a second year of storage is estimated at $179,000.

Keith Zgonc, the deputy chief of police for Sandy Springs, said the cameras will be used to record “all officer-citizen contacts, arrests and critical incidents” that are a result of a call for service or an officer-initiated call for service.

Why the deputy chief says they are important to policing.
