Ten families living in a Jonesboro apartment complex found themselves without homes Tuesday morning after a fire tore through their building overnight.

Clayton County firefighters were dispatched to the blaze at the Flint River Apartment Homes shortly after 5 a.m., Battalion Chief Laura Richardson said.

It’s unclear what caused the fire, but investigators determined it began inside a unit in Building O. By the time the blaze was extinguished, 12 units were damaged by fire, water or smoke, Richardson said. Two of those apartments were vacant at the time.

No residents or firefighters were injured, but 42 people displaced by the fire are receiving assistance from Red Cross volunteers, agency spokeswoman Sherry Nicholson said. The emergency assistance includes essentials such as food, clothing, medication and a place to stay.

“Caseworkers will continue to work with them in the days ahead to provide additional recovery resources and help them get back on their feet,” Nicholson said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
