A Gwinnett County woman tried to hit her boyfriend with a pickax in a drunken fight, a police officer said during a court hearing Wednesday.

Joy Renee Carter, of Lilburn, has been charged with aggravated assault, criminal trespass and violating probation after an April 28 argument with her boyfriend.

Carter and her boyfriend had shared 16 cans of Bud Ice before consuming multiple margarita pitchers at a Mexican restaurant that night, Gwinnett County Police Officer Max Gluck said at the hearing. When they arrived to the boyfriend’s home, where Carter was staying at the time, the pair began to argue, Gluck said.

The argument soon turned violent. Carter’s boyfriend told police that Carter broke his television and a glass door. Carter then picked up a pickax and approached her boyfriend, Gluck said. The man told police he was able to take the pickax from Carter.

Carter told police she did not intend to hit her boyfriend with the pickax; she was trying to hit a bench, the officer said. Both Carter and her boyfriend were “intoxicated but coherent” during the incident, the officer said.

Carter was granted $7,500 bond provided she not contact her boyfriend or drink alcohol.
