A couple from Jessup assumed that their BB&T debit card had been destroyed.

The couple requested a new card in January, but it was sent to a BB&T branch in Alpharetta, a little too far of a drive for them to pick it up. The couple asked an employee to destroy the card, but it never went through a shredder.

Instead, Alpharetta police say that Shadearra Wallace, a 23-year-old former BB&T employee stole the card and went on a spending spree, totaling $4,737.78. Wallace, a Stone Mountain resident, admitted to an Alpharetta investigator that she took the card. She is being charged with financial transaction card theft.

Wallace worked at the BB&T at 5520 Windward Parkway in Alpharetta. Her last day working there was Jan. 19, and she officially resigned four days later.

Police say the card was stolen sometime around Jan. 12. Police soon discovered the card had been activated and used at several locations.

On Jan. 13, someone used the card to withdraw $1,000 from a Wells Fargo ATM in Fairburn. The next day, the card was used to pay for more than $3,700 of purchases from a Target in East Point, police said.

The card was also used to make two payments to Georgia Power, totaling $82.25.

On April 5, while on the phone with an Alpharetta investigator, Wallace admitted to taking the card. The conversation was recorded.

Alpharetta police said more charges may come from the Jessup Police Department as the couple reported the fraud there in January.
