October is nationally known as "Adopt a Shelter Dog Month," and north Fulton County residents can claim their own furry friends from the local animal shelter.

The Fulton County Animal Services shelter is offering half-priced adoptions all of this month for dogs over 25 pounds and all cats. The monthlong promotion ties into a local campaign, Lifeline Animal Project, which aims to have 20,000 dogs and cats adopted over the next three years.

Dogs cost $85, but any dog over age five is $40. Cats cost $65. Residents age 55 and over pay only $40 for both dogs and cats.

All adoption fees include spaying and neutering, vaccinations, deworming, a microchip and heartworm or combo test.

The shelter is located at 860 Marietta Boulevard NW in Bankhead and is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
