Saying it needs to expand to accommodate rapid growth, Northside Hospital is seeking permission from Sandy Springs to build an eight-story addition to the north tower of the existing hospital building and a new, 10-story, 1,277-space parking deck.

The Sandy Springs City Council is scheduled to review the proposal Oct. 18.

According to documents filed with the city, the 537-bed hospital has experienced 10-percent growth in patient demand in the last two years and has received permission from the state to add 53 beds. The proposed addition also would house nine observation beds for stays of less than 24 hours, and 57 beds moved from other areas.

Northside has 4,665 parking spaces to serve a staff of 7,000 and daily “patient encounters” of about 4,570. Though the hospital is on a MARTA line and many use public transportation, it says it still has insufficient parking. Also, about 110 spaces will be unusable during the I-285/Ga. 400 interchange reconstruction.

The new deck would be built in the north part of the 38-acre hospital campus at Johnson Ferry and Peachtree Dunwoody roads. Northside has a main hospital building, four medical buildings, four parking decks, surface parking and a day care facility.
