Southeast Forsyth County now has better fire protection in place, said county fire officials. They’ve activated a brand new Station 6 on Caney Road and will officially note its debut with a grand opening and hose-uncoupling ceremony on Monday.

Fire department division Chief Jason Shivers said the 12,500 square-foot project cost more than $3 million to design and build and should dramatically improve service and response times in the southeast, particularly along the Ga. 141 corridor.

He said the station is designed with future expansion in mind. Currently it’s housing one fire engine and one pickup “brush truck” but has four stalls so that more equipment can be included down the road. The station also incorporates a new design allowing for horizontal stall-door opening and closing, putting fire equipment on the road to a call more quickly.

Shivers said the station will be staffed by a minimum of three firefighters per shift, one of whom will be a firefighter/paramedic providing advanced life support.

Monday’s’ grand opening is set for 2 p.m. at 3190 Caney Road, Cumming.
