New Cobb County bus routes connect millennials to Cumberland, Midtown

Let's say you just finished up class at Kennesaw State University and are figuring out the best way to get to a Midtown bar for trivia with some friends. Starting Tuesday, think no more.

CobbLinc debuts three new bus routes Tuesday, some of which would put people near the planned I-285 bridge that will connect to the new Atlanta Braves stadium.

But for those times when you're not going to a game, one of those lines has been pared down specifically to reduce rush hour wait time and takes people right to Midtown.

Route 10 was proposed in late 2015 as being built just for millennials.

The route is now an express line that runs from the Marietta Transfer Center through the Cumberland area and to the MARTA Arts Center Station on 17th Street. The difference is that the bus will now will take a right on Cumberland Boulevard in order to bypass the congested Spring Street before making a left on Akers Mill Road.

"With this change, the route will lead directly into the I-75 HOV lane, offering improved reliability and safety by avoiding the need to change lanes to reach the exit during peak traffic times," the county said.

Busses will now stop at the Residence Inn on Cumberland Boulevard and at the intersection of Cumberland Boulevard and Cotton Street at Cumberland Marketplace. But these are the stop that were cut out of the route:

  • IBM (Northside Parkway at Rivergreen Drive)
  • Kroger (Cobb Parkway at Paces Mill Road)
  • AMC Theaters (Cobb Parkway at Parkway Pointe)
  • Akers Mill Square (Cobb Parkway at Riverwood Parkway)
  • Circle 75 (Cobb Parkway at Spring Road)
  • Chin Chin Restaurant (Spring Road at Cumberland Boulevard)

All three of the new routes will serve the Cumberland Tranfer Center, which is situated by the rapidly growing hub. Just recently, Cumberland Mall announced four new retailers.

CobbLinc, although being new, is also growing: The bus agency added 35 new busses equipped with WiFi this year. CobbLinc runs 100 buses on 18 routes with more than 750 stops, almost 300 bus shelters and touts making more than four million trips a year.

"We want CobbLinc to be the preferred transportation option for the citizens of Cobb County, wherever they need to go," said CobbLinc Director Vida Covington in a news release. "With our new and updated routes, CobbLinc is providing better access for more people than ever before."

And that's important because more eyes are on Cobb these days.

"The changes also position the CobbLinc system to be a key component of the transportation plan for the opening of SunTrust Park at the intersection of Interstates 285 and 75 in the spring of 2017," the agency said in its new release.

Another one of the routes runs from Cumberland to MARTA’s Hamilton E. Holmes rail station.

Route 25 stops at WellStar Cobb Hospital along with Six Flags Over Georgia and connects to Route 30 at Austell Road.

The other line, route 20, starts at the Marietta Transfer Center and zips down South Cobb Drive but no longers hits Concord Road.
