More than 300 people lined up, resumes in hand, to interview for a job with the Gwinnett County Police Department this weekend.
The department was looking to hire 100 officers and 20 communications officers, also known as 911 operators. At the end of the two-day event, the police department extended conditional offers to 37 police officer applicants and 20 communications officer applicants.

The police officer applicants had to undergo a physical fitness exam at the hiring event. Candidates had to be able to do at least 29 sit-ups in one minute, run 1.5 miles in 14 minutes and 46 seconds or less and perform a single bench press of 72 percent of their body weight.
The hiring event was intended to shorten the length of the application process, which normally takes about 12 weeks over two phases. The Gwinnett County Police Department has conducted similar hiring weekends in locations across the country, including upstate New York.
Before the weekend event, Gwinnett County had 104 open police officer positions. If all 37 conditional offers are accepted, that deficit would go down to 67.
