The city of Atlanta recently celebrated the opening of the new and highly anticipated Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation & Aquatic Center with a ribbon-cutting. The center, located at 110 Hilliard Street, is situated between the King Memorial MARTA station and the Martin Luther King Jr. Historic District.

The $24.4 million design-build project, led by Winter Johnson FS360, fills the void created when the original Martin Luther King Jr. Natatorium closed in 2012. The new facility is now a key focal point and unifying center for the area’s dynamic and growing neighborhoods.

The new Recreation & Aquatic Center offers visitors state-of-the-art recreation facilities. Specific features include:

  • A zero-entry family-fun pool with play equipment features and a distinct area with lap swimming lanes
  • A basketball gymnasium with six goals and flexibility for other hard-court sports
  • An elevated running/walk track overlooking the gymnasium and pool
  • A climbing wall
  • An outdoor terrace
  • Multiple community and meeting rooms
  • A senior center
  • Group fitness areas
  • A computer room
