An ambitious new development is slated for historic downtown Roswell, not far from city hall and the consistently busy Canton Street.

Plans for Canton Place include a hotel with up to 120 rooms, an 8,000-square-foot special event space, a restaurant with rooftop dining, a spa, an underground parking facility and an "expansive park-like garden," according to a Wednesday news release.

The groundbreaking will happen in 2017, according the announcement from Roswell Inc., the Roswell Downtown Development Authority, Canton Place Development and Wells Fargo. The announcement was made "in partnership with legendary Atlanta developer and Canton Place chairman Claude A. Petty Jr."

The development is to also include a new Wells Fargo built in the beginning.

The existing bank, at 37 Magnolia St., will be torn down after the new branch is open for business, a spokeswoman confirmed. Business for local customers should not be interrupted.

Roswell Inc. Executive Director Steve Stroud calls Canton Place "a major game changer" for downtown Roswell.

"I'm most proud that this entire project was initiated by the passion of Roswell residents — people who live and work here who want to create a catalyst for continuing positive change for our next generation," Stroud said in the release.
