Kennesaw State to hold ‘campus carry’ info sessions before law’s start

Kennesaw State University legal affairs staff and police officers will answer questions of faculty, students and staff Thursday and outline the statewide “campus carry” gun measure set to begin July 1.

The school will hold information sessions on both KSU campuses about how the law, which allows people with permits to carry concealed weapons on the grounds of public institutions, will work.

House Bill 280 was signed May 4 by Gov. Nathan Deal. He vetoed a similar bill last year because it didn't follow his wishes to exclude guns from being allowed at on-campus child care facilities, faculty and administrative office space, and disciplinary meetings.

The version he signed this year includes those provisions.

Supporters said the bill prevents students and faculty from being “unarmed, easy targets” of possible violence, while critics argued that the presence of guns would increase violence on campus.

"We recognize that the Kennesaw State University community has questions and concerns regarding the concealed carry of firearms," the school said.

The information sessions will be held Thursday.

One meeting is set for 10 a.m. in the auditorium (room 1000) of Prillaman Hall on the Kennesaw campus. The other session will be at 1 p.m. in room 202 of the Engineering Technology Center (Q Building) on the Marietta campus.

The sessions will review the University System of Georgia's guidelines for implementing the measure.
