UPDATED: Family says girl who was hit by car is brain dead

A mother and her 5-year-old child were hit by a car about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday in Clayton County, police said.

The incident happened in front of the Flint River Crossing Apartments on Flint River Road in Jonesboro, Clayton County sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Ashanti Marbury said.

Both were taken to a nearby hospital; the child was in critical condition and the 28-year-old mother broke her leg, Marbury said.

The driver who struck the pedestrians stayed at the scene and charges had not been filed Wednesday night.

An investigation is ongoing.
