A Johns Creek middle school music teacher has moved into the final round of a contest, positioning her that much closer to winning the fourth annual Grammy Foundation's 2017 Music Educator Award.

Nicole Thompson of Taylor Road Middle School is one of 10 finalists vying to win a $10,000 honorarium with a matching grant for her school. The winner will also be flown to Los Angeles and recognized during the 59th annual Grammy Week in February.

Thompson has been overwhelmed by "the outpouring of love and support" shown to her, she said in an email.

"I feel so much love in this community and my heart is full," Thompson said. "I am elated they value music education as much as I do."

In November, Thompson was announced as one of 25 contenders across 16 states. Jason Smith, a band instructor at Newton High School, was also a semifinalist.

The award is presented by The Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation.

The nine finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium and the schools will receive matching grants.

The winner will be announced during Grammy Week.
