Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in America.
The American Cancer Society says that about one out of seven men will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime, and about one in 39 men will die from prostate cancer. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center says that men ages 45 and older should be checked once a year for prostate cancer.
Exams can sometimes be pricey, but twice between now and the end of 2017, the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute will offer free prostate cancer screenings. The first is on Sept. 14, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at 1000 Johnson Ferry Road in Sandy Springs, and the second is on Oct. 12 at the same time at 1100 Northside-Forsyth Drive in Cumming.

While the screening is free, advanced registration is required. Call 404-531-4444 to schedule an appointment.
The screenings are open to men ages 45 to 75 who have never been diagnosed with prostate cancer and who haven’t had a prostate exam within the past year.

Northside Hospital recommends that men make an informed decision with their health care provider regarding the appropriateness of prostate cancer screening.
Screenings will be administered by health care professionals and include a prostate-specific antigen blood test. Test results will be mailed to patients about 10 to 14 business days after the screening.
The American Cancer Society notes that, while many men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, many also live when the disease is discovered early. More than 2.9 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point are still alive today.
