The Brookhaven City Council issued a commendation to police and a K-9 unit for the “heroic” conclusion to a SWAT standoff.
On Saturday, police responded to a call to Guitar Center on Northeast Expressway, which was closed at the time, and found that someone was inside. North Metro SWAT responded and surrounded the building with aerial support from a DeKalb police helicopter.

Brookhaven’s newest addition to the K-9 Unit, Thor, helped apprehend the suspect, who was cornered on the roof of the business. Talawrence Slaughter, 30, was taken into custody, treated for a dog bite and faces burglary charges, according to officials.
“This incident underscores the importance of interjurisdictional cooperation in fighting crime,” Brookhaven Police Chief Gary Yandura said in a news release.
All those involved in ending the situation were honored at the council meeting Monday.
