UPDATE: Benton House at Sugar Hill's cafeteria earned a perfect 100/A score on their re-inspection on Wednesday. The evaluation was conducted at 9:15 a.m.

ORIGINAL STORY (March 8, 2017): Nursing home Benton House at Sugar Hill's cafeteria failed its health inspection Monday, county records show. The cafeteria earned a 65/U on its latest inspection, a drop from its 90/A score earned in December.

Temperature issues were the most frequent violations in the report. Scrambled eggs and sausages prepared for a breakfast buffet were held below 135 degrees Fahrenheit, and a reach-in cooler was above 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Eggs and milk in that cooler were also above 41 F.

Both of those temperature levels are food safety thresholds, according to health department standards.

Other violations include dented cans and not having a written policy for “vomit/fecal accidents” in the dining room. Also, a software program used for staffing did not have a function to specifically exclude workers with non-typhoidal salmonella, typically food poisioning, from the schedule.

“This score is unacceptable,” said Julia Banks, a spokesperson for the nursing home’s parent company. “We are working closely with the health department and our staff to get the issues corrected immediately.”
