The cause of a blaze that burned a 12,000-square-foot home to the ground is under investigation, Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services said.

Firefighters responded to the Dacula home at 2:14 p.m. on Tuesday after a 911 caller reported smoke and flames. The home was engulfed in flames by the time crews arrived to Luke Edwards Road Southeast.

Firefighters initially had to battle the flames from outside the home due to the “magnitude of the fire and intense flames and heat,” said Capt. Tommy Rutledge, a fire and emergency services spokesman.

The home’s occupants were out of town and nobody was in the house. Several dogs were removed from the backyard, Rutledge said.

The home is a “total loss,” he said. The cause of the fire has not been determined and is currently under investigation.
