North American Properties broke ground this week on an $80 million mixed-use development on the Atlanta Beltline's Eastside Trail.

A name for the project was also reveled: Edge. The nearly two-acre property at 670 DeKalb Ave. borders Edgewood Avenue not far from Krog Street Market.

DeKalb County artist Kyle "BlackCatTips" Brooks, whose murals can be seen on the Beltline, was featured at the recent groundbreaking event. Edge will incorporate installations through Art on the Beltline, an exhibition with more than 100 works.

Thirty percent of the 350 residential units on the land controlled by Atlanta Beltline Inc. will be dedicated to affordable workforce housing, according to a news release. This number is an increase from the 20 percent affordable housing allocation announced by the Beltline in March.

ABI purchased the land in 2015 with a nearly $2.5 million loan from The Conservation Fund —  the contaminated site, formerly owned by Aramark, was most recently used as an industrial laundry facility — and ABI and NAP completed the sale in March.

The redevelopment project represents “the vision of building an Atlanta Beltline that everyone can call home,” ABI President and CEO Paul Morris said.

Edge plans also call for 29,000-square-feet of restaurant, retail and loft office space. The retail and residential components are slated to open in early spring of 2019.
