Georgia Gwinnett College announced Friday that it will receive a $1.6 million grant from the National Science Foundation.

The money will be used to fund a "game-changing curriculum project" aimed at increasing undergraduate research.

"A multi-disciplinary team is making research part of the classroom experience for all science and technology majors from their freshmen through senior years," GGC president Stas Preczewski said in a news release. "This is an innovative approach that sets GGC apart, even from most research universities."

Studies show students who conduct research as undergraduates have greater success, officials said, and the grant will advance the efforts made in an existing pilot project.

That project has shown "improvement in the attitude, and even the grade point average" of participating students, officials said.

The grant money will be spread over four years.
