A high school football player killed in a “tragic automobile accident” over the weekend will be buried Wednesday afternoon.

A vigil was held Sunday for Jordan Simonds, a 16-year-old who attended Pickens County High School. He was killed Saturday in the one-car crash, according to a Pickens County Sheriff's Department Facebook post.

Few details have been released about the accident, but officials said the sophomore was driving on Salem Church Road when it occurred.

A juvenile passenger was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, but his identity was not released.

Simonds’ death rocked the Pickens County community.

“We are asking our community to keep the Simonds family in your thoughts and prayers,” Pickens County sheriff’s officials said. “We would also like to ask that everyone pray for the students and staff at Pickens High School as well.”

The school will have additional counselors on hand Monday to assist with grieving students.

Visitation will be held from 3-9 p.m. Monday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m Wednesday. Simonds’ funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
