Youngsters in Milton and Alpharetta will have an awesome opportunity this summer.

They’ll get the chance to suit up and play football, for free.

New for the 2017 season, the Milton Steelers will offer tackle football for Milton and Alpharetta middle schoolers. Free registration is available online at timlester.org and the deadline to register is June 8.

“We're excited to support our program partner in their efforts to remove obstacles for children to participate in Milton programming," Milton's Director of Parks and Recreation Jim Cregge said in a statement. "Getting more kids outside and active is always a win."

The Milton Steelers will offer programs serving children in kindergarten through the eighth grade. Before this season, the Milton Steelers had not offered football programs for middle schoolers.

Tim Lester, a former pro football player who is the Milton Steelers’ founder and league director, says expanding their age groups will allow more youth athletes the opportunity to further develop their skills prior to entering high school.

"We're committed to offering a more personal experience for our participants through smaller team sizes," Lester, a former Pittsburgh Steelers fullback, said in a statement. "Our program is focused on building character, player safety and teaching fundamentals, using the best equipment on the market."

Lester lives in north Fulton County, but grew up in Miami before enjoying a pro football career. He was drafted by the Rams, but earned the nickname “The Bus Driver” as he paved running paths for Hall of Fame halfback Jerome Bettis with the Steelers.

Former New York Jets linebacker Mo Lewis also coaches with the Milton Steelers.

The Milton Steelers report that registration totals have increased for this year-over-year time period with almost 100 players already registered.
