The Johns Creek City Council authorized Mayor Mike Bodker to purchase about 58 acres of land along the Chattahoochee River at a meeting Monday night.

Johns Creek wants to use the land as park space and ponied up $8.2 million for it. The original price was $9.05 million, but The Trust for Public Land assisted the city with the purchase by contributing $850,000.

“I am very excited about this land purchase and the increased recreational and open space opportunity it provides to our residents,” Bodker said in a statement. “The city council was eager to continue efforts to address Johns Creek’s growing park needs and was able to do so with this valuable piece of property at a reasonable price.”

Exactly how the land will be used will be planned through a public process, and through the development of a master park plan.

The purchase will give Johns Creek the ability to plan for a multi-use trail system along the Chattahoochee River devised in 2015.

With this latest land purchase, Johns Creek has increased its available park land to about 360 acres.
