When Donald J. Horton qualified to run for mayor of Roswell last week, it created a hole on the city’s council.
Horton wasn’t up for re-election as a councilman and his term on Post 3 doesn’t expire until 2019. But since he qualified, he must give up his seat on the council, regardless of the outcome of the mayoral race.
So, Roswell will hold special qualifying for the Post 3 seat on the city council from Sept. 6 to Sept. 8 at City Hall.

The dates and times were voted on at the mayor and city council meeting Monday night.
Qualifying fees are $540 for the Post 3 seat. It will be voted on the same day as the mayor and other council elections, on Nov. 7.
Horton was elected to the Post 3 seat in 2015 after it was vacated by Betty Price, who left it to run for the State House. Horton beat out four other candidates for the post. He had also served as the mayor pro tem.
