UPDATE (6:45 p.m.): The City of Atlanta government offices and the Atlanta Municipal Court will close for the entire day on Monday due to the Winter Weather Advisory, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced Sunday evening. Essential employees are still expected to report to work.

It’s been so cold for so long that any wet weather could leave ice on the roads Monday morning in parts of North Georgia, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan says.

But ice is not likely to affect traffic to the National Championship game between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide at Mercedes-Benz Stadium Monday night.

“Any showers by that time will be few and far between,” Monahan said.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of Northern and Western Georgia — including Atlanta — in effect until noon on Monday. Metereologists warned of an icy glaze on roads due to freezing rain, creating “hazardous travel conditions.”

Any precipitation, the weather service said, should become rain by early afternoon on Monday.

The possibility of ice comes from road temperatures that are at 15 to 25 degrees across North Georgia, Monahan said.

“This will allow for glazing of ice anywhere we get freezing rain/drizzle,” he said.

The air above will be too warm for snow, Monahan said.

Sunday temps started out below freezing before sunrise as runners prepared for the Extra Yard 5K, the official road race of the College Football Playoff.  The winning runners won tickets to Monday’s game.

The metro Atlanta area will feel temps in the low 40s with a high of 42 degrees Sunday.

Right now, it’s 38 degrees in Atlanta, but it feels like 32, Channel 2 reported.

If you’re heading to Centennial Olympic Park for a concert by The Chainsmokers this evening, be sure to bundle up. The temperature in Atlanta will be 33 degrees by 10 p.m., Monahan said.

Hang on, though. We’re almost through the cold snap.

Warm air expected Monday will bring Tuesday morning’s low up to 40 degrees and temps in the 60s are forecast by Thursday and Friday, Monahan said.

Isolated rain showers are also possible through the end of the work week.
